HOSSEGOR

The town of SOORTS associated with the district of HOSSEGOR became the resort of the literary and intellectual world at the beginning of 1900. The seaside resort was born in 1931.

The exceptional natural site of Hossegor will inspire the greatest architects: – Henri Godbarge, Louis and Benjamin Gomez, Robert Maurice and Louis Lagrange – who will build some 400 villas in this new seaside resort. Each house differs from its neighbor but all are built in a unity of expression – the Basque-Landes style – which reconciles modern technique and regionalist inspiration.
Towards the beginning of the 1930s, the Gomez brothers built the Place des Landais, the first development of the town’s seafront. It is very original for its time with rows of villas called “in strips”.
Some hotels were built at this time, such as Les Hortensias du Lac, the Hôtel du Parc (Gomez brothers) and the Mercedes. The slogan of the time was “Hossegor The seaside resort of elegant sports”. The Sporting Casino, a sports complex with swimming pool, tennis court and Basque pelota court, was built in 1927. It will attract an elegant and wealthy clientele. That same year, a magnificent golf course emerged.

However, it is another sport that will revolutionize Hossegor: Surfing. In the spring of 1957, the first French surfer, Jack Rott, tried a board on the cob North of Hossegor on the Landes coast. On the first try, he managed to get up and ride his first wave to the edge. The first surfers appeared on the Gravière beach in Hossegor and on the Basco-Landes coast in the mid-1960s and the resort quickly became a mythical surfing spot in the 1960s and 1970s. It then attracts surfers from all over the world. The South West between Biarritz and Hossegor is nicknamed “the California of Europe”.

Today HOSSEGOR offers you three different atmospheres

  • Sporty on the ocean side
  • Peaceful on the lake side
  • Lively in the city center with its shops and restaurants
